Orson Scott Card – Tales of Alvin Maker Part 2 – Red Prophet

Red TYPE: Fantasy

RATING: 9/10

REVIEW:

I had started reading this once before but never proceeded after a few pages. It felt dull and somehow too unrealistic.

Now that I went back and re-read it, the feeling is a bit different. Fantasy never felt this good. I could actually put myself in the place that was described and feel everything that the author expressed.

The book here takes us through the lives of Alvin Maker Jr., Lolla-Wossiky who later becomes the Red Prophet and Ta-Kumsaw, his brother. The Whites are at constant war with the Reds who are supposed to be the original inhabitants of the land. However, the Whites, with their customs, seem to have killed the land and the Reds are too drunk to notice.

REVIEW:

This one’s the grand finale of the series and what a way to end it. God’s position is now needed to be replaced because the current immortal holding the position is too much of a narcissist to notice the sufferings of other people.

We have Orlene who has an untimely death (refer to book 2, Bearing an Hourglass) after the death of her son. Jolie, Satan’s lover, is now being taken care of by Orb who is the Incarnation of Nature. Satan is up to his own set of mischief and everyone else is out to stop him from taking over the world, in a fashion, of course.

While awaiting death, Jolie comes to the aid of Orlene and together they set out towards the search of her dead son. Orlene then finds out that her son is with Nox, the Incarnation of Night, and that she must get some things from each of the seven Incarnations if she is to get her child back.

The story deals with how each of the Incarnations is related to Orlene in some way and how they help her ‘win’ the things from them. The only trouble is with God, who refuses to meet her and the story is changed with that.

An awesome conclusion to the series. I loved the entire series and may read them all over again, just to get to know the characters better.
